Sam, I really enjoyed this look into the self education of the founding fathers. I have read biographies of most of these men but was necessarily looking at their self education. Gives me a lot to think about. Thanks
Thank you for sharing these peeks at several of the founders’ educational methods. I know a lot about Franklin, whom I’ve studied extensively over the years, but I didn’t know much about the others. I was particularly interested in Madison’s study of ancient politics. Talk about learning from history!
Of course! Yes, it's so interesting and inspiring to see how great leaders and thinkers used reading old books as a way to achieve such groundbreaking change.
Sam, such a great article! Very coincidentally, I'm currently sefl-studying the American Revolution with an emphasis on the Founding Fathers. Adams and Jefferson being my most loved, so far.
I love learning at my own pace and being able to take the time to dive down a rabbit hole without the constraints and time frame of a formall academic setting.
Thank you Justine! The US revolution was my first experiment in systematic self-directed study. I was, and still am, a bit obsessed with the statecraft aspect of it all.
If you like Adams and Jefferson, there's a cool book called Founding Brothers which contains a chapter on their intellectual correspondence and difficult friendship.
This post is very interesting, I like the topic you talk about and how you have focused the research to inspire us 🙌🏽 I have already shared it! Thank you for your newsletter ❤️

Happy to help — I definitely recommend checking out the book First Principles, a deeper treatment of this subject.

Thank you! I'm glad you found it inspiring :) More on the topic of autodidactism to come.
The bit about John Adams comforted me, too. I also constantly feel like I’m getting nowhere and wasting energy! Great post.
